Life on the club circuit was definitely the way to go. Party all night, sleep all day and never have to worry about the way things turned out. It was a life of action without the fear of consequence, every night fading one into another until it was all one long orgy of excitement and drugs, the bodies changing but the people staying the same. It was a pastime of the young that could not be denied–the right and desire to ruin brain cells in the pursuit of happiness.
From his earliest memory, he had been a fun-loving kind of a guy, and by the time he was fifteen he was sneaking into clubs with a fake ID in one hand and a bag of weed in his pocket. It was the perfect life. People would buy him drinks and take him home with them so he could crash on their couches. He had friends, people he could turn to in times of trouble and free drugs whenever he felt like escaping from reality.
Then, when he was twenty-three, he met the real live vampires. What the media would have called “bloodsucking monsters,” but who he saw as his friends and family. They were the perfect people to hang out with, and they were all really smart, even the most idiotic among them. And they knew so much about the world and life, since they were all older than they looked.
For awhile things went along like always. He did the circuit, lived the life of a freewheeling spirit, and got laid on a regular basis. He was friends with the vampires, the werewolves and the Others that roamed the city nights. It was perfect.
Then, when he was twenty-nine years old, he was shot in the chest with a silver-plated bullet aimed at one of his werewolf pals. He had thought that he was dead until he tasted something so wonderful that he thought Heaven had come upon him. The darkness came after that, and when he awoke… he was different. He wasn’t human anymore. He was a vampire, a monster of the night. It was so cool.
There were so many things that he could do now that he had never been able to do before. And he didn’t really have to worry because it was almost impossible for him to be killed. Life had only gotten better.
At thirty-seven, he didn’t look it. He was going to be young forever.
